Art & Lifestyle | THIS IS NOT A TOY Exhibit at Design Exchange
THIS IS NOT A TOY is guest curated by music and fashion mogul Pharrell Williams and is the first time coveted artists, Brooklyn’s KAWS and Japan’s (and my personal favourite artists) Takashi Murakami, have shown their work in a design museum. Dedicated to exploring the conceptual toy – a form made solely as an expression of an aesthetic or idea – as a fine art and design object, as well as a contemporary cultural signifier, This Is Not A Toy marks the first time these vibrant collectible sculptures, figures and paintings have collectively been on display in a museum setting.
All of the above pieces, (with the exceptions of the first photo) are works and creations from Takashi Murakami who has worked with the likes of Kanye West and has collaborated on various limited-edition collections with Louis Vuitton. Murakami was the artist responsible for creating the Louis Vuitton monogram multicolore canvas print, making it one of Louis Vuitton’s most successful additions, AND is also the most knocked off! Take a look at the mini-movie Murakami created for LV below – if you like anime like me; you’ll totally get it. I freaked out when this came out like 4/5 years ago!
The exhibit runs from February 7 until May 19, 2014, and takes its name from the disclaimer found on packaging for objects that may be called toys, but aren’t meant for play. Although not something that many children may understand — this would be an excellent option for any March break plans – the kids would totally love it. Although you may need to explain a few of the concepts to them.
