LGFW | Pink Tartan S/S 2012

Always one of the busiest and most anticipated shows every season during LG Fashion Week is Pink Tartan. For me this season was particularly enticing because rumors were swirling that, creative director, Kimberly Newport would debut her men’s collection, apparently titled Black Tartan. Chic, right? Great name for a menswear line!
But to my sadness, whispers and back-door commentary were just hot air! But that’s not to say we may not see that in the future. Newport’s beginnings were that of menswear when she first emerged as a designer.

The current S/S 2012 collection debuted during NYFW with a good response from spectators, media and buyers alike, with Newport coming out as a favourite and her fanbase and clientele here at home, can second that.
Personally, this latest collection saw too much inspiration from other designers that for the most part, did it better the first time - the Prada striped dresses, the Alaïa cut-out belts and Marc Jacobs-esque dolka dots. Dare I go on? The brands signature 60s & 70s aesthetic was present as always and I enjoyed the pops of red and orange. Playful short skirts and soft ruffles that evoked classic femininity in a manner that wasn’t over the top. A solid collection from beginning to end, but it’s gone too commercial for me and I’d love to see Pink Tartan take some risks. The chances of that happening - slim to never, because that’s not Pink Tartan’s demographic, sad but true!
